A Single "Moment" in Geologic Time: A Finder of Lost Worlds in Death Valley

Death Valley is one of the premier paleontology parks in the entire National Park system. There is a stunningly complete record of fossil-bearing strata extending over nearly a billion years, including rocks from every period of the Paleozoic era (543-251 million years ago). The Paleozoic era was a critical period of Earth's history, having seen the first appearance of most of the most important (i.e., diverse and common) animals and plants. There were the marine invertebrates like the brachiopods, corals, bryozoans, gastropods, cephalopods, pelycypods, and graptolites. There were the first fish, the first amphibians, and the first reptiles. There was the first invasion of the land by plants and animals. In fact, the only major groups that didn't evolve in Paleozoic time were dinosaurs, birds and mammals.

Even the Grand Canyon is missing vast swaths of geologic time from the Paleozoic, including the entire Ordovician and Silurian periods.  Death Valley is truly unique, but when we start a discussion of the next two geologic eras, Death Valley is lacking in some respects. The thing is, if we are going to see exposures of the oldest rocks, rocks that are usually buried deep in the crust, than something has to happen to bring them to the surface. At Death Valley, only one layer can be found from the Mesozoic era (251-65 million years), and it's from the earliest period, the Triassic. There are Jurassic and Cretaceous rocks, but they are intrusive in nature, having formed deep in the crust from molten magma (granite and related rocks). Although dinosaurs and early mammals no doubt roamed the landscape many miles above, no record remains of their existence at Death Valley, as the rocks were uplifted and eroded away long ago.

The situation is the same for the Cenozoic era (65 million years to the present). In most parts of the park, Cenozoic rocks can be found, but none are more than 14 million years old. In other words, there is a gap of well over two hundred million years at Death Valley for which no fossil records can be found. Except for a single moment in time 34 million years ago...

Death Valley was proclaimed as a national monument in 1933 by the only U.S. president who had a career as a geologist, Herbert Hoover. A newly graduated geologist named H. Donald Curry was appointed as the first ranger/naturalist at the park. In his role, he provided evening programs for park visitors and did research during the day. He mapped large areas of the park, and was the first to describe the enigmatic turtleback surfaces that led to the discovery of an entirely new kind of fault, the detachment fault.

Some blasting was being done to clear a road to Leadfield and down Titus Canyon. Curry noticed the rocks in the upper canyon were sedimentary, and that a skull was exposed in one of the roadcuts. It turned out to be the first discovery of a Titanothere west of the Rocky Mountains, and an entirely new species to boot (it's now called Protitanops curryi, after Curry). Further work revealed numerous other fossils as well, including Mesohippus (one of the earliest of horses), Colodon (a species of tapir), Teletaceras (a primitive Rhinoceros), Protoreodon (extinct species of artiodactyl, distantly related to modern cows, deer, pigs, and camel), and Leptomeryx (a small deer-like ruminant). Other fossils included early species of rodent, fish, and turtles.

In other words, Curry had stumbled across a snapshot of a single moment in time that provides us a look at the world that existed after the dinosaurs had been extirpated. Mammals were working themselves into dominance of the rapidly changing terrestrial environments of the early Cenozoic era (they were in a rather intense competition for a time with the birds). That these sediments were preserved at all is lucky, as rocks of similar age are found nowhere else in the region. Somehow the so-called Titus Canyon formation was not eroded even though all the rocks dating from the time of the dinosaurs had disappeared, as well as those from the first thirty million years of the Cenozoic era. It would be another twenty million years before other sedimentary rocks would be preserved in the Death Valley region (the Artist Drive formation, 14 million years ago).

The Titus Canyon formation is composed of conglomerate, sandstone, calcareous mudstone, algal limestone, and tuffaceous sandstone, preserving what once was a savanna environment with adjacent forests. Although rocks like the Titus Canyon aren't found elsewhere in Death Valley, rocks of similar age are found in southern California (the Sespe formation), and west of the Sierra Nevada in the Great Valley (Ione formation).

This has been part of an off and on series about our February visit to Death Valley National Park. We were following the gravel road that crosses the Grapevine Mountains and descends through Titus Canyon. The road is accessible by most cars, though high clearance is recommended, and travel is definitely not recommended in bad weather (the road passes through a narrow canyon in the lower reaches). From here, we were about to pass through an upside-down mountain range!

Time Beyond Imagining - A not-so-brief History of the Colorado Plateau

I'm almost embarrassed to come back to this subject, but I have always had an unfortunate propensity to leave big projects unfinished and I would like to overcome it. I was also inspired by the reemergence of the Accretionary Wedge after a brief absence, and some of the final posts in this series will involve the newest theme of the Wedge for June. The subject of my blog is the geologic history of the Colorado Plateau, and it has been a theme of my blogs since last July, although posts have been sporadic of late. Check here to get caught up. My last post concerned the disaster that met the animals of the region at the end of the Mesozoic era. This post will seem similar, but now we are looking forward to the new world that was left to the survivors at the end of the age.

The Colorado Plateau of the early Cenozoic was a new and unique landscape, unlike anything that had passed before. Somewhat like the last post, it brings to mind another poetic passage in the Bible, from Isaiah: "For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be remembered or come to mind." The oceans, which for many eons had washed over the region in a series of transgressions and regressions, had receded far to the west and south, and never again would lay down sediments on the Plateau. The crust had been buckled by regional compression which reactivated ancient faults in the deep crust and forced the rocks into a series of structural domes and basins. This event, the Laramide Orogeny, is what raised the Rocky Mountains, and formed the broad outlines of sub-provinces of the Colorado Plateau that we see today. The edge of one of the uplifted domes is seen as the Cockscomb Monocline in Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument. Farther north, the buckled rocks form the eastern edge of the Kaibab Plateau that is bisected by the Grand Canyon.

Rivers were established across the landscape, and some ended up with nowhere to go, forming vast lakes in what is now Utah, and Wyoming. Volcanism swept across the region as well. But more than anything else, the region was now far above sea level, so in most areas it was eroding, and rocks that had been laid down over the previous 2 billion years were now being stripped away and being carried to the sea. For the geologists of today, it meant that the evidence of the past was disappearing, and in many respects, the Cenozoic Era is one of the most cryptic time periods for us to decipher. Compared to Paleozoic and Mesozoic time, Cenozoic rocks are fairly rare on the Plateau, and thus little evidence remains to tell us what happened, or who was living here.

And that is the other part of the story...the ecosystem of the region, and indeed the entire planet had been decimated by...something. The iconic dinosaurs were gone, and many large denizens of the oceans had disappeared as well. The land-based ecosystems in the earliest part of the Cenozoic were depleted, especially of larger animals. The mammals, who for whatever reason had survived the extinction event, vied with the birds for dominance. The birds almost won! Some species of the avian clan were large flightless predators that would have done their dinosaurian ancestors proud. But by and by, the birds retreated to the environmental niche they were best adapted for, the trees and skies, and mammal-based ecosystems were established in forests and grasslands throughout the world.

Time Beyond Imagining - A Brief History of the Colorado Plateau: On to the Grand Staircase

I have enjoyed exploring the Grand Canyon on this blog over the last few weeks, using the incredible gorge as an introduction to the history of a unique corner of North America, the Colorado Plateau. A layperson could be forgiven for thinking that the history of the world is written in the walls of the Grand Canyon given the rich story told by the rocks there, but there are many parts of the story missing. So Geotripper is going to hit the road and start exploring some other corners of the Plateau country. We will return later to the Grand Canyon because we still have not explained how the canyon itself developed, but that is actually one of the last events in the history of the region.

What is it that is missing from the story? Well, imagine this: standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon, you can look down and see nearly 2 billion years of earth history in the mile of cliffs below you. Now, look up. Today you see only sky and clouds...but not that long ago there was at least another mile of sediments covering this landscape. Another mile! These rocks recorded the Mesozoic and Cenozoic history of the region, the 245 million years leading to the present day. Putting it another way, the entire history of the dinosaurs, the birds, and the mammals.

How do we know they were there? The Mesozoic rocks are found north and east of Grand Canyon, sitting on top of the Paleozoic rocks. The most striking exposure is a series of cliffs visible from the Kaibab Plateau north of Grand Canyon long known as the Grand Staircase. Named for the dominant color of each of the cliffs (the Pink Cliffs, the Gray Cliffs, the Vermilion Cliffs and so on), the region includes several famous national parks (Zion and Bryce Canyon), but also some less familiar national monuments and state parks (Grand Staircase-Escalante NM, Kodachrome State Park, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park and others).
