Just for Fun, a Minor Monday Mystery

Where am I and how do you know? There is the obvious clue provided by the street signs, but if they weren't there, would you have any way of knowing something of where I spent the day? A clue: the picture was taken at lunch time!

  1. I could certainly get the latitude to within a degree or two (assuming it was taken today or yesterday). You are within the zone referred to as "tropics."

  2. Hawaii? street name, black soil, minimal shadow directly below stop sign

  3. Somewhere around 23.5 degrees north latitude at noon on summer solstice judging by the paucity of the stop sign shadow.

  4. Google Earth says 20.230433°, -155.798630°, give or take a few feet. Near the north end of the big island. I see the sun is at zenith, and it's a few weeks yet before summer solstice, so you're a little south of the Tropic of Cancer. But Google Earth found the street for me (I love Google Earth).

  5. Very cool. I just got back from Guam and noticed the utter lack of shadow at noon next to the tanks we were working near. Something you don't pay that much attention to on a daily basis unless it catches your eye and I've never noticed a shadow like the one in your photo before. Thanks.
