And Westwater and Cataract canyons in Utah, on the Colorado River above the Grand Canyon, both rival the Grand Canyon in beauty, though not in length. Glen Canyon on the Colorado, before it was mostly drowned by Lake Powell, was an awesomely beautiful canyon. And on the Green River, Lodore, Desolation, Gray, Labyrinth, and Stillwater canyons are all very majestic. The Yampa River, still free of any large dams, flows through the forbidding Cross Mountain Gorge and then the awesome Yampa River Canyon before joining the Green. The Sand Juan River has some unbelievable canyons, including the Goosenecks section, before it joins the Colorado in Lake Powell. And finally, the Dolores River has some incredible canyons but the construction of the McPhee Dam upstream has mostly dewatered the river; this is one of the most tragic losses in all the southwest, I believe.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211670216140060946.post-75502455951867087272022-07-22T16:37:08.671-07:002022-07-22T16:37:08.671-07:00Thank you.Thank you.DSchwartz78https://www.blogger.com/profile/15583190414990707982noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211670216140060946.post-33054637436163132692022-07-20T14:48:26.944-07:002022-07-20T14:48:26.944-07:00A canyon is usually considered a deep gorge cut pr...A canyon is usually considered a deep gorge cut primarily by rivers and mass wasting. All canyons are valleys, but valleys are often described as low areas between mountain ranges and have a variety of origins, often by faulting and tectonic processes. Thus, the Owens Valley, the Rio Grande Rift Valley, the Central Valley of California. All of these have rivers, but they were formed by tectonic processes. The two terms obviously overlap in meaning, but canyons are more specifically a river or glacier-eroded feature as I understand it.Garry Hayeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00531226195147986457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211670216140060946.post-51709291268052881982022-07-20T04:21:42.749-07:002022-07-20T04:21:42.749-07:00So how does a geologist define the difference betw...So how does a geologist define the difference between a canyon and a mere valley?DSchwartz78https://www.blogger.com/profile/15583190414990707982noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211670216140060946.post-83742947027044150832022-07-18T17:09:26.752-07:002022-07-18T17:09:26.752-07:00Great article, I hadn’t heard of some of those can...Great article, I hadn’t heard of some of those canyons and always like finding new places to learn about.
