But there is a special place south of Turlock that is a preserved piece of the prairie: San Luis National Wildlife Refuge. There is a nice visitor center, along with two auto-tour loops that take you across prairies and wetlands, at this time of year there are tens of thousands of migratory birds, geese, cranes, and ducks.
