So we hiked around for about 1/2 day then tried to camp at a private campground on the east side of the park - hit ant eruptions (AEI 3) any place we pounded a tent stake - so jumped back into the car and ran out to Sunset Beach for the nite and a nice morning hike and breakfast in Aptos. (Oh yes: a major late Loma Prieta aftershock happened the next day; the fault was VERY smelly where 129 crosses it near Logan Quarry that trip; glad I wasn't in the Pinnacles caves when the quake happened). Will need to get back there some day, but as a Park everything will get more formal and more expensive; not sure I'd like that.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211670216140060946.post-59466836500862146022013-01-03T22:54:41.954-08:002013-01-03T22:54:41.954-08:00The monuments are every bit as valuable to our cou...The monuments are every bit as valuable to our country as the national parks, but they are often treated by politicians as step-children, often because monuments are established over the objections of said politicians. Parks might get better treatment (I would love to see some push to purchase the adjacent ranchlands on the other side of the San Andreas). On the other hand, Denham supported the park very specifically to increase tourism, not to protect it better...and they haven't made provisions for more funding yet.Garry Hayeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00531226195147986457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211670216140060946.post-41990909494322929262013-01-03T07:00:43.785-08:002013-01-03T07:00:43.785-08:00Will there be any advantages to National Park vs N...Will there be any advantages to National Park vs National Monument? Will these make up for the increased visitation (probably why Denham pushed it), increased administrative framework and costs, increased regulation?

I do agree Pinnacles is a great place.Hollishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10788942181934895493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5211670216140060946.post-23828399224018312502013-01-02T20:00:05.371-08:002013-01-02T20:00:05.371-08:00Pinnacles National Monument includes a well known ...Pinnacles National Monument includes a well known among enthusiast simply as the pig fence. It is a challenging stretch of strenuous hiking that at times requires use of the fence, erected to prevent feral pigs from entering the park, to help oneself to climb the steeply pitched trail.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
